HAIR TIPS

Hair Types
There are a number of ways to keep your hair feeling, smelling, and looking like a million bucks-without spending a million bucks!

Basic maintenance is the best way to keep your hair in tip-top shape. Change your shampoo brand every two or three months to reduce build up. Use brushes made of animal hair rather than synthetic fibers to prevent excess wear and tear on your scalp and hair ends. Allow your hair to dry naturally whenever possible to keep the ends from drying and splitting, and most importantly, visit your hair dresser on a regular basis and make sure those split ends are snipped off.

Most of us have hair concerns that are specific to our hair type. Listed below are tips and recipes that will have your damaged, dry, limp, or oily tresses feeling silky smooth and healthy.

Dry, Frizzy Hair

Shampoo hair every other day; washing your hair too much will make it dry and frizzy. On alternate days, rinse hair and condition the ends. If your scalp becomes oily in between washings, apply shampoo only to the crown of your head and make sure you condition the ends. When blowdrying hair, aim blowdryer nozzle downward and hold hair straight as you're blowing it dry. Our conditioners and moisturizing treatments offer natural solutions to the frizzies.

Oily Hair

Use a shampoo and conditioner designed for oily hair and use conditioner only on the ends of your hair. For very oily heads, massage talcum powder on your scalp with your fingertips and brush repeatedly to remove every trace of powder. Our Oil Reducing Aloe Treatment is great for those days when you've got the "greasies."

Limp, Straight, Fine Hair

If you have very fine, thin hair, your best bet is to use a gentle baby shampoo with a low detergent formula. Most of us with this type of hair long for curly, luxurious locks. For flowing curls that won't hurt your hair, wash our hair, blow dry on a cool setting until hair is just a little damp, then set hair in Velcro rollers for 10-20 minutes. If you don't want defined curls, you can easily maximize the volume of your hair by simply piling your damp, just-washed hair on top of your head and into an elastic band (coated in fabric that won't damage hair when it's removed) and blow dry hair on a cool setting until dry. If you must use hair rollers, invest in the kind that use steam heat, which is gentle on your hair.

Damaged Hair

Damaged hair is usually the result of over processing with chemical treatments such as hair dyes and permanent waves. Natural alternatives such as henna dyes offer a less damaging alternative to metallic dyes and peroxides. Over exposure to the sun and environmental pollutants can also cause hair to become dry, brittle, and weak. Hair is weakest when it is wet. Only brush your hair when it is already dry and always comb your hair with a wide-toothed comb before you brush it. Try our Avocado and Olive Oil Shine Treatment or Banana Almond Conditioner to perk up your distressed tresses.

Swimmers Hair

All you swimmers out there know exactly what we're talking about: green, dry, chlorinated hair. Wear a swimming cap! Also, wash and condition your hair as soon as you're finished in the pool. Once a week, use a deep conditioner specifically made for swimmers.
